Twenty-five percent of respondents reported a worsening financial situation in the last six months, and a significant portion lack the financial buffer to cover unexpected expenses. This vulnerability is further exacerbated by concerns about the province's economic outlook, which contributes to a sense of insecurity.
A Crisis of Food and Housing
One of the most striking findings is the increase in food insecurity among Quebecers. A staggering 30% now report difficulties accessing adequate and healthy food, up from 22% last year. This has led to a situation where food has become the primary concern for many, surpassing even housing and child-related costs.
The impact of this food insecurity is far-reaching. It affects productivity at work, a child's ability to learn and participate in extracurricular activities, and ultimately breaks down the social fabric of the community. As Tasha Lackman, CEO of Centraide, puts it, "It's not a short-term thing. It impacts the future."
Housing is another major source of instability. With 27% of tenants fearing eviction, the survey highlights the vulnerability of many Quebec households. This is particularly concerning in the context of an aging population, where fewer people are employed, leading to a bleak outlook.
Community Organizations Stepping Up
Community organizations are on the front lines of this crisis, with a significant increase in demand for their services. Last year, one in three people accessed community organizations for support, a figure that rose to 54% this year.
Centraide, a key player in this landscape, supports a network of community agencies and organizations. Through its annual campaign, it provides financial support, leadership training, and professional development to help vulnerable people improve their living conditions. As Lackman explains, Centraide's role is to "support the social fabric of Montreal" through long-term mission funding and by leveraging its connections with the business community.
Scaling Impact and Influencing Policy
Centraide recognizes that while it can have an impact through philanthropy, the issues are too big to tackle alone. It aims to influence the state and work towards systemic change. One example is the Carte proximité program, which provides prepaid credit cards to low-income families for healthy food purchases. This program, implemented by community food centers like the Depot, has had a significant impact on people's lives, and Centraide is exploring ways to scale and strategize its influence on government policies.
The ultimate goal, as Lackman sees it, is to create a safe and beautiful city for everyone. By reducing poverty, Centraide hopes to reduce polarization and build a more equitable society.
In my opinion, the work being done by Centraide and community organizations is crucial in addressing the immediate needs of vulnerable populations. However, it is essential to also advocate for systemic changes that address the root causes of financial vulnerability. This includes policies that ensure access to affordable housing, living wages, and a robust social safety net. Only then can we truly tackle the pervasive financial anxiety affecting Quebecers and build a more resilient and inclusive society.
